Established by Congress on February 21, 1899, to remember one of the most crucial battles of the American Civil War, the Vicksburg National Military Park reminds us about the campaign, siege and defense of Vicksburg. A tour to Vicksburg National Military Park takes us to the times when Vicksburg campaign was waged from March 29 to July 4, 1863. The park features reconstructed forts and trenches that bring to mind the memories of the 47-day siege that ended in the surrender of the city. Vicksburg was considered as one of the important fortress guarding the Mississippi River. With the fall of Vicksburg and victory at Port Hudson gave the United States control of the Mississippi River.
Spread on an area of over 1,800 acres (7.3 km2) of land, the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966.
