The R.W. Norton Art Gallery is nestled on a 40 acre landscaped park featuring a water garden and over 13,000 azaleas in South Highlands. Founded in the year 1946 by Richard W. Norton, Jr., and his mother, Annie M. Norton, this museum was opened to the public in 1966.
This prestigious art gallery is particularly known for its extensive collection of Western artwork by Frederic Remington and Charles Marion Russell. The gallery exhibits their paintings and sculptures that represent the colorful, bittersweet landscape of the American West in the age of cowboys.
The RW Norton Art Gallery in Shreveport also features collections of American and European paintings, sculptures and decorative arts spanning more than four centuries. Rare books, antique dolls, Wedgewood pottery and silver pieces by Paul Revere are on display. The grounds feature a garden with more than 10,000 azaleas.
The Norton features an ever-changing array of exhibits, and 2010 promises to be a great year for its patrons. Currently showing is a collection of lithographs, advertisements, and magazine covers from artist Maxfield Parrish's illustrative heyday in the 20s and 30s. Exhibits of Alex Dzigurski and Ansel Adams are scheduled to arrive later in the year.
