The Arkansas Post National Memorial is located at a distance of about 13km southeast of Gillett in Arkansas. A unit of the National Park Service, the memorial was established to commemorate the key events that occurred in European-American history.
The Arkansas Post was initially founded as a trading post at the site where the Arkansas River enters Mississippi River. It became a part of United States in 1803. Owing to the strategic location of the Post at the confluence of two major rivers, it played a significant role during the American Civil War. Details of this war are well preserved & interpreted at the Arkansas Post National Memorial.
Arkansas Post National Memorial was on 27th Feb 1929 established for the first time as a state park. In 1959, a bill was introduced to make the Post a unit of the National Park System. This was done to help the park receive more funding so as to be able to better protect the history of Arkansas Post.
Today, the Arkansas Post National Memorial consists of two units – The Memorial Unit & the Osotouy Unit. The Memorial Unit is spread across 389 acres & comprises of a visitor center with theater, museum & miles of paved trails. The museum exhibits history of Arkansas Post.
