Mississippi River Tributaries

The Length of the Mississippi River from its starting place at Lake Itasca in Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico is 2350 miles long and has some 250 tributaries which drain a total area of more than 1,247,000 square miles. The actual length of the river may vary from year to year; its length is now shorter than it was a century ago due to the cutting off of meanders, engineering and other factors and even today it varies 30-50 miles each year. The Mississippi River is the third longest river system in the world when including the Missouri River tributary.

The second major tributary of the Mississippi river is the Ohio River which is formed by the junction of the Alleghany and Monongahela River in Pittsburgh. This tributary travels about 980 miles in Cairo, Illinois, and the Mississippi River. The Mississippi River Tributaries are very wide as the river. Rivers of Kentucky, Rivers of Illinois, Rivers of Indiana, Rivers of Iowa, Rivers of Kansas, Rivers of Missouri, Rivers of Montana, Rivers of Nebraska, Rivers of North Dakota, Rivers of Ohio, Rivers of Pennsylvania, Rivers of South Dakota, and Rivers of West Virginia all are the tributaries of Mississippi River.
