The Meeker Island Lock and Dam is a historic site, closely associated with Mississippi River. It was the lock and dam facility built on the Upper Mississippi River that worked as a part of the early rivalry between St Paul and Minneapolis. It was also an attempt to allow shipping on the Mississippi to reach upriver from St Paul to Minneapolis.
But few years later, the construction of Lock and Dam No. 1 on the other side of the river made a Meeker Island dam unnecessary and permanently moved boat traffic upstream to Minneapolis.
Today, this historic site has become a place, where people like to come for spending quality time. Though, it is not that popular, it is considered an ideal attraction near Mississippi River with historic significance.
The main attraction of Meeker Island Lock and Dam is trail. East side of the Mississippi River, right at the boundary between St Paul and Minneapolis, there’s a trail that cuts off steeply from the main bike and walking path, leading down to this great historic site. Besides there’s a series of trails and tucked away spots with beautiful views of the river, where you can sit or have snacks.
