Mark Twain Cave was discovered by a hunter named Jack Sims in the winter of 1819-1820 when he and his dog went on a hunting trip and chased an animal into an opening in the cave. The cave was opened for public in 1820 and is considered as the oldest show cave. The cave was Mark Twain’s favorite play ground, is mentioned in about five of Mark Twain’s books and has become quite famous in his book The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The cave has been visited by all sorts of visitors from across the world including presidents, heroes, villains, historians and scientists.
Cameron Cave is Missouri’s top tourist attractions, discovered by Arch Cameron on a cold wintery day when he saw steam emitting from the ground while he was tending cattle on the property. The cave is much larger and complex than the labyrinth of Mark Twain Cave. The present day cave is similar to what was discovered earlier and is open to public only in the summer or with special reservations.
