Fort Smith National Historic Site, Arkansas

Fort Smith National Historic Site

Fort Smith National Historic Site is a well renowned US national historic site located in downtown Fort Smith along Arkansas River. Established way back in 1961, the site is considered amongst the top historic tourist attractions in Arkansas.
The Fort Smith Historic Site was established on Christmas Day with the prime purpose of protecting the remains of 2 U.S. military forts of the nineteenth century. The best place to begin a tour of this historic site is the Visitor Center, now located in the area of former courthouse/barracks/jail buildings. This can be followed by a tour of the park grounds containing the Commissary Building, reconstructed gallows, military parade grounds, Trail of Tears & a leisure walking trail along the Arkansas River.
The site is open for public on all days. For groups & schools, arrangement for guided tours is available. It usually takes a minimum of 1 hour to view the orientation film of 15 minute followed by a tour of the visitor center exhibits. It takes another hour or two for touring the park grounds & participating in the various interpretive programs. Interesting activities for the complete day are organized on special event weekends.
What you need after a tiring day of touring at the Fort Smith National Historic Site is a good place to recline. Hotels like the Courtyard by Marriott Fort Smith Downtown or the Sup 8 Van Buren Ft Smith Area near the Fort Smith Site are some great options in this regard.
