Opened to the public in 1970, Historic Fort Snelling is a former military fortification located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Mississippi Rivers in Hennepin County, Minnesota, U.S. Today it is one the best and most popular historic sites in the country. Besides, it is also a part of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area that is a unit of the National Park Service.
History: This fort was decommissioned in 1946 and split up among various government agencies. Finally in 1960, local opposition to the freeway led to the fort and got it listed and protected as a National Historic Landmark. Soon after that, in 1965 the Minnesota History Society started restoring the site.
There are various historical displays in the fort, so hire a guide and know about all those interesting exhibits. These exhibits are the main attraction of the fort. Besides, you can also enjoy numerous activities as well as the number of entertaining shows and events held in the fort. With these amazing attractions, Historic Fort Snelling attracts approximately 55,000 visitors every year.
Timing: Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day: Tuesday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday noon to 5 p.m.; September and October: Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Open Mondays Memorial Day, July 5 and Labor Day.
How to Reach: State roads 5 and 55 meet up in close proximity to the Minnesota’s International Airport, where fort’s visitor center lies. Besides, visitors from out of town and within St. Paul alike can also get to Fort Snelling easily by car, bus or train.

Admission: $10 adults, $8 seniors and college students, $5 children ages 6-17; free for children age 5 and under and MHS members.
