The Henry Vilas Zoo is a Free Public Zoo owned and operated by Dane County and supported by private donations. Located on the pleasant banks of Lake Wingra, this zoo has a wide variety of wild animals and numerous options of entertainment which can be enjoyed by both kids and adults. In 1911, the first animal exhibits were created, representing the start of the Henry Vilas Zoo.
The property over which the zoo stands was donated by the Vilas couple in the year 1904. The park was named in memory of the Col. William F. and Anna M. Vilas’s son, Henry, who died at a young age due to complications from diabetes. The zoo developed within the park remains free all 365 day. The Henry Vilas Zoo is one of only a few, no-admission, free parking AZA qualified zoos nationwide.
The zoo exhibits many different animals like the elephants, zebras, tigers, monkeys, lemurs, lions, seals, kangaroos, camels, muntjacs, penguins, polar bears, camels, and kangaroos and so many others! The zoo is spread throughout a large area, so there is a lot of walking and lots to see. The zoo also has a Herpetarium which showcases variety of rare reptiles, tortoises, pythons, and all kinds of different amphibians, and fish.
The Henry Vilas Zoo also holds a Children's Zoo, which includes new animal exhibits, an electric train, carousel and an adventure play area.
