Opened on August 6, 2005, The Figge Art Museum is an AIA award-winning art museum in Davenport, Iowa. This is one of the oldest art institutions in the country and the first municipal art gallery in United States, housing a huge encyclopedic collection.
This major art museum for the eastern Iowa and western Illinois region has got its name from the V.O. and Elizabeth Kahl Figge Foundation that donated $13 million towards its $47 million construction. It also works closely with numerous regional universities and colleges as an art resource and collections hub for several higher education programs.
The major attractions of the Figge Art Museum include -
Figge art Collection - There are 4,000 works of art, ranging from the 16th century. Other than these there are Substantial American Collection, European art and Grant Wood Archives in this section.
University of Iowa art collection: This collection totals over 12,000 works, including significant paintings by American artists. Besides, it also includes the significant pieces from sub-Saharan Africa, Pre-Columbian art, a significant collection of European and American prints & drawings and much more from other areas of the world.
There is also a National Center for Midwest Art and Design in the museum that is well known as NCMAD. This center works to promote the study and appreciation of 19th and 20th century Midwest artists, designers, and architects from the Midwestern United States.
