Built in 1848, the Biloxi Lighthouse stands adjacent to the Mississippi Sound of the Gulf of Mexico. It has got the distinction of being the only lighthouse in the whole of United States that has been looked after by female keepers for more years than any other lighthouse. The 48- foot lighthouse in Biloxi was the first to be made of cast-iron with locally fired bricks being used for building the inner masonry wall and fitted with a fourth-order Fresnel lens on top of it. Regarded as the city’s signature landmark, it has successfully survived Hurricane Katrina.
The Lighthouse was declared a Mississippi Landmark in 1987 and has been listed amongst the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It has gone through a major restoration at a cost of about $400,000, which was funded by FEMA and MEMA. It is listed amongst the most visited places in Biloxi and visitors make it a point to take photographs of this historic monument.
